"COVID-19 is changing lives as we know it and it’s clear that it’s not going away anytime soon. Large-scale social and behavioural changes will be the best defence in tackling the virus. We must be mindful that even though the coronavirus, if not controlled may spread rapidly, how we respond and behave towards it really matters."
Businesses have responded by ensuring the best care for all employees during working hours such as providing alcohol-based hand sanitisers and sanitisers to clean surfaces and equipment, temperature testing, staggered lunch times, mandatory face masks, social distancing seating plans, rotational and remote working strategies and the like. This is a necessary obligation for us to ensure the health and wellbeing of employees is a top priority while at work. However, the virus doesn’t work office hours! It has no period associated with it; therefore, it is imperative that we manage this across a 24-hour timeline. This means that individual ownership must apply.
Personal responsibility is important to limit the spread of infection. It’s not just us who come to work that matter, our families and communities have to protect each other as well. It has to be an all-round effort against spreading COVID-19.
We, all of us and our families, need to go from a perspective of behaving like “I must protect MYSELF” to one of “I must protect YOU”. We must participate individually and collectively to safeguard one another by adopting responsible habits of:
- Washing of hands with soap and water and/or using alcohol-based hand sanitiser regularly
- Social distancing of 1.5m, and
- The wearing of face masks at all times.
